June’s Genealogy Roundup: News and updates from FPLD

If you can’t beat the heat in your house, then head for the library!

The Fountaindale Public Library just updated its database offerings with Mango Languages, Universal Class, and full access to the Chicago Tribune Historic Newspaper Archive.  All these resources are free to use in the library or at home with your library card.

For anyone who wanted to learn the native language of your ancestry, Mango Languages can set you on the road to success!  Mango offers 34 languages courses, an intuitive learning philosophy, and axillary translation tools to assist you with your learning goals and research.

I’m currently enrolled in the Genealogy 101 course through Universal Class, and I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up!  If you’re new to genealogy, or just want to brush up on the basics, this course is for you!  The material is easy to understand and interesting to read.  The assignments are straight forward, and the accompanying research tools sum up the coursework nicely.  The Genealogy 101 course typically takes 20 hours to finish all class assignments, and participants receive a certificate upon completion.

In addition to Genealogy 101, Universal Class has 500 additional courses to chose from, including American Revolutionary and Civil War History, European History, and research organization courses.

The next FPLD Genealogy Club Meeting will be held on Wednesday June 15 at 7 p.m. at Bolingbrook Fire Station #4 (1111 West Boughton Road in Bolingbrook).  Steve Szabados will present ‘Tracing Grandma’s Ancestors’ which will focus on how to find the vital records for your ancestors in Europe.  He will discuss acquiring records tips used to translate them.  Steve is an great speaker, so don’t forget to mark your calendar for this fantastic presentation!

Hope to see you all at the library!
